1 Step forward and 3 Steps back?
CHELSEA 1-1 RB SALZBURG AS UCL MATCHDAY 2 SEES CHELSEA HIT ROCK BOTTOM
The headline pretty much doesn't convey the entire story obviously. It's only matchday 2 and Chelsea ain't off to the Europa League already. In fact, being the first game under Graham Potter, Chelsea were better than what they were in the past weeks. Yes, the usual 1 mistake that made them concede before prevailed, but there were plenty of positives to take.
What went right?
The pace and intent was finally seen among this set of players. Raheem Sterling leading the way for the blues, Mason Mount stepped up his game finally and Reece James dominating down the flank as usual.
They passed quick, moved the ball swiftly, no one seemed to be done even after scoring one goal, they badly wanted another and seal things off then and there. That intent was something that all Chelsea fans were desperately longing for. Obviously Potter hasn't had his full impact on the squad yet, he mighthave just been like "Show me what you got." and pretty much everyone played like they were Slytherin and they had to defeat Potter's mindset if he had negative ones about any of them (Yes, you may expect plenty of Hogwarts from now on). In my opinion, it could have easily been a 3-0 if Kai Havertz and Aubameyang stepped up, maybe just the two players that we should discuss in the next heading. But when Broja came up, he pretty much seemed to be the better choice among these three players.
What went wrong?
"The number 9 curse" pretty much seems to prevail, although it is a bit early to call him a flop.(Just 14m a flop even then, not 100m) But there will be competition at that spot, for the new manager will look to strengthen weak spots as soon as possible, with the likes of Armando Broja looking to start more, and new signings that may arrive during the winter window. So both Aubameyang and Havertz have to load up and bring their A-game as soon as they can, or will be benched even worse, sold. As a conversation between Graham Potter (will be referred as Potter in future articles) and Todd Boehly (Will be referred as Wilson Fisk in future articles, don't ask me why) was revealed, Potter is said to retain his position even if Top 4 isn't secured and that is supposedly the right move by Wilson Fisk.
Indeed the previous manager should have been backed as well, but at least now that there is some safe zone for the manager, it could result in better overall performances in my opinion.
Next game against Liverpool is postponed and that ought to give Potter more time with the squad and thus we can expect all 3 points in the next game.
